Established in 1906 by Richard William Winning, Winning Appliances had its origins in the carriage and saddlery trade. After weathering WW1 and the Depression era, R. W. Winning & Co branched into selling Simpson-branded metalware, cooking equipment and eventually whitegoods.
The demand for gas stoves, electric ranges and petrol-powered and electric wringer washing machines increased after World War II, which resulted in R.W. Winning & Co. expanding staff numbers. The company was the first to introduce front loader washing machines into the Australian market, and in the 1970s Winning Appliances became an Australian pioneer by offering households whitegoods attractively displayed in kitchen settings.
Nowadays, Winning Appliances has seven showrooms in NSW and two in Queensland. Offering old-fashioned customer service in a modern retail environment, Winning Appliances stocks over 50 kitchen and laundry brands, including high-end brands such as Miele, Gaggenau, Asko, Sub-Zero and Wolf.
The Winning family retains 100% ownership of the business, trading as Winning Appliances Pty. Ltd. The management and staff of Winning Appliances have embraced the family ethos and are pleased to work for a company with such a proud tradition and history.
In 2005, John Winning (son of John Winning Senior) was working in his family’s bricks and mortar retail outlet Winning Appliances when he recognised the growth opportunity to sell whitegoods online. Recognising this would service the demand to replace broken-down whitegoods and appliances quickly and efficiently, a 21-year-old John set out with a $50,000 business loan and founded an initially stand-alone online retail business.
Backed by a rigorous approach to high-quality service, the business began making a profit within three months. Since then, Appliances Online has continued to enjoy remarkable growth, spreading its wings well beyond the Sydney metropolitan market to become a truly national business. This astonishing success story has resulted in Appliances Online becoming the leading online retailer of appliances and white goods in Australia, trusted by more than 260,000 customers worldwide.
Handy Crew began life in 2003, working under the name “CKW Installations.” Servicing only the Sydney area until the launch of a venture in Brisbane in 2010, the business had direct relationships with appliances manufactures such as Miele, Bosch, Asko, AEG and Liebherr, plus retail outlets including Winning Appliances and Appliances Online.
The business joined the Winning Group in 2011, when it was re-launched as Handy Crew in Sydney and Brisbane and brought for the first time to Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.
Today, Handy Crew consists of licensed plumbers, electricians, refrigeration mechanics and carpenters, as well as specialised Sub-Zero, Wolf and Qasair installers, with a total staff count of 25 and growing.
